Immigration

Immigration is an international process in which a resident of one country moves to another with the intention to settle there permanently. This person cannot have the status of citizen already, but since such a move is permanent, they are going to apply for one eventually.

Some reasons why people immigrate are to escape poverty, find or work, have a spouse in another country, or with another million reasons.

Migration

Migration is the movement of people from one place to another, whether could be seeking permanent residency or just for seasonal reasons.

In conclusion, immigration is a part of migration.

History of Immigration and Migration

Historically, migration, immigration and emigration have been practised since the 17th century in Europe, Africa and Asia.

This migration is also done for many factors and reasons. For example, the spread of religion, world trade, which was the main economic sector at the time, slavery and colonialism, and the aftermath of World War II.

But in this century, immigration and migration are mostly done for personal reasons such as wanting to get a dream job and school, finding a mate in a foreign country, and so on.

Although moving through immigration and migration seems to have many benefits, there are some negative risks faced by immigrants and emigrants.

Impact of Immigration and Migration

Continuing the discussion on the impact of immigration and migration above. Here are some examples:

1. Economic and Employment Rate

When an individual leaves their country of origin, the pool of available employees in the local market naturally decreases. This can ultimately impact the wage system, although typically the effects are either positive or neutral.

2. Population Rate

In situations where a country experiences a significant population, emigrants can serve as a valuable asset by alleviating the strain on resources. However, in cases where population rates are low, the impact of emigration can be more detrimental.

3. Crime Rate

Based on IMF Working Paper, there is a significant public concern regarding the impact of migration on receiving countries, particularly in relation to the potential link between immigration and crime. It has been observed that cities with high crime rates often have a higher proportion of immigrants.

Besides the impact on the country or city, immigrants and emigrants are also vulnerable to fraud and human trafficking. Hence, there are specific regulations and organizations to govern these immigrants and emigrants.

International Organization in Charge of Immigration and Migration (IOM)

It was initially established in 1951 as the Intergovernmental Committee for European Migration (ICEM) to aid in the resettlement of individuals affected by World War II.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is a United Nations agency that assists governments and migrants, including internally displaced persons, refugees, and migrant workers.
